Independent reading is the key to developing strong comprehension and a love of reading.  Children who read a lot strengthen their skills, deepen their engagement with books and build confidence.  Extensive reading in great chapter books prepares fourth and fifth graders for the reading challenges they’ll face in middle school and beyond.   

How Does This Program Help You Support Your Child’s Independent Reading?

This program makes it easy to find the right books for your child by providing you with two important tools. The Reading Development Booklist summarizes hundreds of enjoyable, age-appropriate books, divided into sections according to level of difficulty. The teacher will work with each student and provide you with an individualized Book-Level Assessment identifying the right level of books for your child. As a result, you will be confident that you are helping your son or daughter select good books at the appropriate level of challenge.
